Frequently asked questions
How many characters can a tweet or SMS have?
A post on X (Twitter) allows 280 characters for most accounts. A single SMS is 160 characters using the basic GSM alphabet โ but adding an emoji or special character switches the message to Unicode encoding and drops the limit to 70 per segment.
Why do longer texts get split into multiple SMS segments?
When a message exceeds one segment, carriers split it and reserve a few characters per part for reassembly headers โ so multi-part GSM messages fit 153 characters per segment (67 for Unicode). Each segment is typically billed as a separate message.
Do emoji count as one character?
Not always. Many emoji are made of multiple Unicode code units, and platforms count them differently โ X counts most emoji as two characters. If you are right at a limit, test with the actual platform before posting.
